Egg: The yolk is rough-surfaced, but clear, and the oil globule is red-amber (A). There are black stellate pigment spots on the embryo (in 2 rows), and on the oil globule (A1), but none were seen on the yolk.  A few of the eggs seen were slightly oval. Incubation is about 70 hours (22-23°C).

Larva: The larva is unmistakable, with the roughness of the yolk transferred to the finfold (B1) and a white patch of pigment in the dorsal finfold above the anus (B). The eyes are pigmented prior to hatching, but the mouth is not yet functional (B). B: 3 days PC, but newly hatched(22°C).

The egg and larva are very similar to LIIIE5, and they might even be the same species. For this reason this page has been assigned to Macrorhamphosidae. The larva was not successfully reared past first-feeding. No larvae have been barcoded.

This egg was uncommon off Park Rynie, having been seen on only 14 occasions, all as single eggs, and all in winter (blue graph). The egg was not seen in the DHM samples. Only 11 eggs were found in the Park Rynie linked samples, 4 inshore and 7 offshore.
